Winter Warmers @ Gurney Plaza

Fancy for a classic English-styled afternoon tea at Gurney Plaza?

Well, you can drop by Winter Warmers as the offer a variety of tea and other beverages, plus delicious food (cakes, waffers, scones, cheese baked macaroni, local delights and etc.) served by using beautifully decorated fine bone china tea sets, as well as dishes. XD
Winter Warmers is a good place to drop by for brunch, lunch and even dinner due to the reasonable price when you order your food based on a great variety of set meals available. That explains why I often go there for my meals when I am on a shopping spree at Gurney Plaza.
(Dang! not again..i tend to order the same food again...and again...and again)

Usually, my mom and I will order the  set meal which consists of an appetizer (a small plate of salad), a pot of hot black/green tea, a main dish and a dessert. If not mistaken, the set meal is only available during lunch time (12pm - 3 pm) and dinner time (6pm-9pm).
You can upgrade the tea for the beverages of your choice for only adding RM1.00.

The menu of the set meal is well illustrated with photos of the food served and you can see some photos of the food served through out the menu. So, you'll know what you'll be getting to fill your growling stomach...lolz

Macaroni Cheese Bake Set Meal @ RM 17.52 (with no upgrades for beverages)
(I got 20% discount as I'm a member and I went there on weekdays)
The cheese is creamy and simply too delicious to resist.
Everything is delicious and you won't feel too 'full'
after finishing the whole portion of cheese baked macaroni. Yummy!

Iced Mixed Fruit Cocktail --> paid RM1.00 to upgrade my tea ^^

I tried a tea called 'Gun Powder' before.
I like the slight bitter taste of it. Don't be deceived by the name.
The tea was great!

However, I tried 'Loving Tea' a long time ago.
Kinda tasted funny with heavy flowery smell. Not my piece of cake anyway.

The adorable dessert served after
your set meal. (They will stated it in the menu)
However, you must remind our dear
waiters and waitresses to serve
you the dessert as they will
forget it when they are busy..... >.<

Afternoon Tea for one (set meal) @ RM15.21
(with 10% of discount due to weekends)
Another fav of mine!!! The scone is crispy and warm.
You can eat it on its own or with butter and jam.
There are a selection of food on the platter:
cake, fruits, sandwich, scone and cookies

Tuna Waffer (eaten this for quite sometime...forgotten the price :P )
Another of my fav! Waffer!
They have a selection of waffer: ice-cream, fruits,
tuna, chicken and etc...etc...(can't recall...gomenasai)
I recommend fruits waffer and tuna waffer.
The ice-cream waffer is ok, but still
I prefer the one from A&W.

 Lots of red beans.

Forgotten the name of this beverage. Perhaps ice-blended latte?
I ordered this in June (late posting again!) and
I used to like it when I tried last year until I tasted
pepper in the red beans when I reached
the bottom of my drink Ewwww~~~.

The beautiful cup used to serve the tea. <3
(an old photo found in my FB account )

Overall, Winter Warmers is a decent place for your meals and tea. It is beautiful decorated with floral wallpaper and table cloth...plus, wooden chair to bring out the English ambiance in the restaurant.
Some food are delicious...some are ...well...ok...but still, I do recommend this place for a lovely afternoon tea or get together.
I shall update more on this. XD

Food: 8/10

Price: 7/10 (still reasonable for a cafe located in a mall)

Ambiance: 8/10 (lovely...simply sweet and lovely...not for guys though)

Notes: Besides Gurney Plaza, Winter Warmers is available at Queensbay Mall, Auto City and Sunway Butterworth (all Penang). You can find this cafe in KL as well.

Northam Beach Cafe @ Penang

East meets west! That's what I can say when you ask me bout Northan Beach Cafe.

Northam Beach Cafe is a food court (or rather known as hawker centre to us locals XD) located at Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah which is well know for the beautiful colonized era's bungalows. XD

Well, this eatery is well know for Penang's famous hawker food, as well as some international delights, such as Japanese food, Philippine's,  French and Italian.( There used to be a Mexican food stall though)

I recommend this eatery to my friends whenever they drop by Penang as this is a good place for great food, besides the great ambiance facing the sea and cool breeze for the open-aired section of the food court. I like this place as you won't be disturbed by people asking for donation and stuff.

The entrance of Northam Beach Cafe.

There are ample parking spaces available,
but I will go there for dinner before 7 p.m. to avoid the big crowd.

Xuan Xin Steamboat @ Gurney Plaza

Please take note that this outlet is no longer available at Gurney Plaza

Xuan Xin has 3 eatery outlets in Gurney Plaza. Recently, they opened another steamboat outlet in Gurney Plaza (the highest level of the plaza, same level as GSC Cinema), besides the Xuan Xin Restaurant on the 3rd floor of Gurney Plaza's New Wing ( beside Sakae Sushi) and Xuan Xin Ramen Kitchen located at the basement of Gurney Plaza ( the same row as Speedy Video).

I always have my meal with my family at Xuan Xin restaurant due to the affordable price of the set meals offered. Well, much more cheaper as compared to the food found at the other eateries around the mall. (shall write a post on that soon...real soon ^^)

Xuan Xin Steamboat at Gurney Plaza is similar to our well-known local delight, 'Lok Lok'. The ingredients were put together using a skewer. You can just dip the skewers into the soup of your choice and enjoy your food. XD Besides, if you were a fan of barbecue, YUP, you can send your food to the barbecue corner to be grilled without going all the fuss of grilling them by yourself and ended up smelling like you've been smoked. Urgh!

Assorted fish balls waiting to be cooked.
Notice the sauce? They are available at the counter near the kitchen.

'A' Curries Curry House @ Perai

I used to have Indian food for my meals when I was in university due to the cut throat business of the Chinese food operator in my campus. The Indian Aunty is much more friendlier and the prices of the food is reasonable compared to the Chinese stall of our cafeteria.

Anyway, I've developed a liking for Indian food because of the spices used in the dishes. They are aromatic and I really like the appetizing smell.

I went to a curry house located in Taman Inderawasih for dinner with my aunt. Her friend recommended that place and they have been frequenting that place for lunch lately. The food is not bad. I like the naan bread which is baked using a traditional oven and it goes well with the Tandoori Chicken.

The tapestry like woven decorative items on the ceiling.
The place is air-conditioned.
It can still be stuffy because the door was open and it is better to sit under a fan.

Michelangelo's @ Gurney Plaza

This restaurant is no longer available at Gurney Plaza.

When ever I come across the name 'Michelangelo', I will think of Renaissance art, including the famous sculpture of David, as well as the painting of Leonardo Da Vinci for no reason. =.=

Back to the topic, Michelangelo is a newly opened fine dining Italian restaurant at Gurney Plaza (not art gallery), replacing BREEKS cafe. To be precise, it is located between Chilli's and Coffee Bean. The theme colour of the restaurant is black...with a good combination of light beige which made the interior design classy, besides adding some Renaissance painting in the interior.
My first impression of this place is that the food could be pricey and we might not get used to eating Italian cuisine (except the localised pizza and spaghetti) as most of us were used to the affordable delicious Penang Hawker delights. Well, they do have Set Lunch promotion...and in my opinion, it is considered affordable if you were to go there once in a blue moon.

I went there on 30th September to have a brunch with my bestie and luckily...we did not order that much as the food portion is big and we were forcing ourselves to finish up the food.

B B Q Plaza @ Gurney

I've read some articles on Bar B Q Plaza (or BBQ Plaza) from a few magazines before, such as I-feel and the Pearl magazine published by Jusco. Thought the food was like 'Seol Garden' styled Korean BBQ steamboat until I went to try it during the raya holiday and it proves me wrong.

Bar B Q Plaza is a Thai steamboat outlet. It is indeed far more better then a Thai steamboat I've tried before near Pulau Tikus.
The meat was not pre-seasoned and I kinda like the taste when I eat it with the special sauce. Yum!

Boston 又一城 @ Jusco , Bandar Perda

Please take note that this outlet is no longer available at Jusco, Bandar Perda

Boston ( 又一城 ) is yet another Hong Kong styled restaurant which serves both Western and Asian delights, just like Kim Gary or Wong Kok Char Chan Teng's selection of food in the menu (thick toast, rice, noodles etc.)

I've been there once last year with my mom and I remember that I don't really like the food. Before that, I've been there with my friend as well and I can't recall if its Boston or Hongkie as  the menu was not the same. We had rice with dishes that time. Never mind bout the details, that was more then a year ago. =.=

Anyway, I decided to give it a try again since I haven't been there for almost a year. Well...what can I say is that the food is so-so and I don't really like what I've ordered the other day, except that the soya cendol drink that I've ordered. They are irresistible and I shall gulp down another glass of it if I were not that full after my lunch. ^^

Hot Honey Lemon Tea @ RM5.95.
Rather expensive though.

Red Bean Cendol Soya with Gula Melaka @ RM4.95
A must try! I like the taste of soya drink with gula melaka.
The combination of ingredients are superb! heart it.

Sweet and Sour Chicken Rice @ RM 9.95
This is ok. A balanced meal with vegetables, chicken, egg and pickles (to enhance your appetite).
Rather pricey compared to the similar rice dish I had in Taman Universiti's coffee shop when I was there.
The portion was bigger and cheaper.

Chicken Fillet Cheese Bake Rice @ RM 9.95
Not of my liking. The amount of cheese is fine. However, I should not opt for mushroom sauce. (Should have chosen black pepper sauce instead)
Nothing special. With chicken fillets and some corn. It seems to be tasteless?

My cheese bake rice
(Perhaps I should order sweet and sour chicken bake rice?)

If you were a HSBC credit card holder,
you are entitled for 15% discount from your total bill if you dine at Boston.

Overall, the food is average. I shall come back again for the soya drink and perhaps for some thick toast.

Ambiance: 4/10 (nothing unique...just a simple restaurant)
Food  : 5/10 ( I only fancy the soya drink so far...)

Food Court @ Padang Brown, off Dato' Keramat Road

The food court of  Padang Brown, Penang has been around since a long time ago. I heard that my father used to frequent there with my great grandmother last time, perhaps around the 1960's. Anyway, I've been there tons of time, since I was in primary school and the food court is famous for its food, such as pasembur and popiah.

Pasembur is known as 'Che Hu' in Hokkien (green fish). It is a mixture of crispy prawn fritters with shreds of sweet turnip and sprinkles of jellyfish. It is served with thick gravy and can be known as another version of the local salad. (Besides the famous rojak.)

Mooncakes for Mid-Autumn ^^

Wow...time flies and it is already Mid-Autumn Festival. Nowadays, people started selling mooncakes as early as towards the end of the 6th lunar month. Meaning  that, you can even see moon cakes around during the month of Hungry Ghost Festival. ^^

I am can get really excited when I see mooncakes in the mall. This is not because of the taste, I am going for the packaging. I like to collect the beautiful oriental designed boxes. They are artistic and can be an inspiration for me while doing wallpaper designs.XD

This year I went for last minute mooncake shopping actually. Even though I managed to get a good bargain for the monncakes (bought some for RM10), the choices were limited and most of them were out of stock. However, I still managed to get something I like (green tea mooncake) while I went shopping at JUSCO, Bandar Perda. XD (10% of  discount was given to all mooncake purchase, while 30% for Tesco, but I can't see anything i like at BM Tesco )

Clinic Cafe @ Gurney Plaza, Penang

Please take note that this outlet is no longer available at Gurney Plaza

It took me a long time to write something about Clinic Cafe of Gurney Plaza as I was way too lazy to write something a while ago. I went there for dinner with my friend on 14th January, 2011. (that was a while ago... XD)

Clinic cafe is interesting, with the hospital themed decorations, plus the 'doctors' and 'nurses' in the cafe. Hmm...it reminds me of cosplay and perhaps Maid Cafe? ^^

The food in the restaurant is ok, if you were not picky ...typical stuff in the menu that you can find in other places. The food might be pricey, but I went there just to have fun. I want to have a drink using a conical flask and 'pour' some ketchup using the syringe. I can still be very childish at times. lolz

The chairs, which are the modification of hospital beds. There is another section full of wheel chairs as well.

TGI Friday's @ Queensbay Mall

I've been to TGI a few times since it opens at Queensbay Mall. Although the food can be pricey, well, they are delicious and the portion is big.lolz. I usually shared the food among my family and friends as I can't finish the large portion by myself (One serving of food is meant for two if you have a small appetite).  Frequenting there once in a blue moon is not a big deal as it won't burn a big hole in your pocket. lolz

TGI Friday serves a variety of mouthwatering American classics, such as burgers, sandwiches, steaks as well as cocktail (margaritas and table side shakers ^^). The food is great. I've tried Chicken and Peppers and Mushrooms ( I like the herb rice...yum), Fish and Chips and Double-Stack Chicken Quesadillas. I keep on repeating the same order and decided to try something new this time. XD

Almond Chicken Salad @ RM 25.90

I dunno that salad with Bleu Cheese crumbles, mandarin oranges and balsamic vinegar can be that good. I am not a fan of vinegar and yet...I like this one.

Dragon 9ine @ Bellisa Row

Please take note that this outlet is no longer available at Bellisa Row

Dragon 9nine is another Hong Kong styled (perhaps Cantonese styled) restaurant located at Pulau Tikus. I've been there once actually and decided to go there with my friend for supper after watching a charity concert since this place opens until around 3 a.m (if not mistaken) .

The interior decoration is colorful and unique. This place used to have a variety of dim sum in the menu, but guess they have made some modification recently. Now, they serve mostly Chinese dishes and rice.

old town white coffee @ autocity Penang

Met up with the girls last weekend for a chat and decided Old Town White Coffee as our venue. Autocity located at Juru is a great place to hang out and to grab a meal as there are lots of eateries around. Even tough you are spoilt for choice at Autocity, sometimes you still can't make a decision on which one to choose from.

I haven't been to Old Town for 2 years and am surprised on the new addition in the menu. Besides the Kaya and Butter toast, there are some set meals and additional stuff looks tempting. Anyway, I like the setting of the cafe as the designed is based on the decor of the olden day's coffee shop, with the bronze coloured fan, marble tables and wooden chairs. It can be a good place for young generation to walk down the memory lane of the good old days perhaps.

If you are finding a good place to have a gathering or a long chat, Old Town can be a good choice. However, for local delicacies, I would suggest that those from the local coffee shops or food courts might be better and affordable, except for the Butter and Kaya Toast that you must try and eat it when its hot. However, according to my friend, autocity's old town cafe can be pretty packed during lunch hour. Guess that it is still a popular spot to go for lunch.

Snoopy-San is here!!!

This outlet is no longer in business.

I came across the Charlie Brown Cafe in Hong Kong when I was reading a Chinese magazines years ago and I didn't thought that they would open an outlet in Penang's Straits Quay.

Charlie Brown does bring back lots of nostalgic childhood memories of mine since I watched the cartoon over tv when I was small. I still remember that I mistaken Woodstock as a "yellow kutu", a.k.a a louse from Snoopy's body. Since I used to own 2 dogs at home last time and they have lice. Thus relating it as Snoopy's louse instead of it's friend. rolf. silly me!

I managed to drag my friend there during a one fine day in May.
The design of the cafe is amazing, with the characters from Peanuts around every corner of the cafe, the exterior, the interior , even the ceiling and windows! It is a wonderful place for you to take photos non-stop. However, when it comes to the food, they are so-so and a tad bit pricey, perhaps except the Lemon Cheese Cake (RM6.80) we have tried and the Cappuccino with Lucy on the froth(RM 9.50), which is cute. ^^

We also had Creamy Seafood Pasta and Charlie Brown Chicken Pizza which cost RM15.80 each, as well as another chocolate blended beverage, Franklin Frappa (RM 15.00) .

I rank the ambiance for 10/10 due to it's cuteness( Yup...I was snapping photos until self-proclaimed 'siok sendiri'). Plus, the music they are playing are food related! I remember hearing something on ketchup??? *.*

However, the food only scored 5/10. Not bad...but not of my liking. But, kids and Peanuts lovers will like this place because of the cuteness. lol

Paddington House of Pancake @ Gurney Plaza

Please take note that this outlet is no longer available at Gurney Plaza

I am a big fan of waffles and it didn't cross my mind to give English pancakes a try even though I've walked pass the outlet located at Queensbay Mall for a zillion times already. =.=

Well, finally, Paddington House of Pancake set foot in Gurney Plaza a few months ago, replacing 7 Bistro. (omg...I've only been there once and they have already closed it!)

At the entrance, you will be welcomed by a big wallpaper of tempting pancake behind the counter which you won't miss from the entrance. The wallpaper is beautiful, but luckily, the pancakes were not a let down.

I was in time for the Brunch & Tea set as I dropped by for tea after shopping with my family. The tea set includes a pancake and adrink. ^^

I ordered a set of Dutch Pannekoek, which comes together with a icy passion fruit and manggo crunch (RM 8.50), as well as an English bluberry chese pancakes (2 pancakes per plate for RM9.50).

The food is ok and I would give it a rank of 7/10. For the ambiance, well 5/10 for me as it is located in a busy shopping mall with simple design of a regular cafe.

Shaking...Shake! Shake!

It is indeed an uphill task to hunt down an affordable cocktail shaker in Penang as I don't know where to get it.

After searching around Gurney Plaza, I found one in Living Quarters (A shop located 3rd floor in Gurney Plaza, next to a cell phone shop). The cocktail shaker is from awell known stainless steel utensil brand, Zebra. There is only one size available, which is the large one and it costs around RM130 +/-. (I can’t really recall the price)

Anyway, during my vacation in Langkawi, I managed to stumble upon a wine shop in Kuah. 16 Degree Wine Shop is where I found my cocktail shaker <3. The shop is located at Jalan Pandak Mayah 6, the same row where Zeno Duty Free is located in Kuah. 16 Degree sells a large variety of wines and they only have limited choices of liquors in the shop.

There are 3 sizes available for the cocktail shaker, which are small, medium and the large one. However, the shop assistant recommended that I get the small one as it is easier for me to use it (It fits in your hand) and I do not need to go through the fuss to estimate the amount of cocktail I need to serve for one serving :3
The cocktail shaker costs me RM19.00 as it is not of a well-known brand. It seems I can’t find the brand from the cover, but only some wordings on the box mentioned that it was made in a province in China. (I’ve thrown away the box and can’t recall…Dang!)

Well, I am experimenting with cocktail and I will only get a good shaker once I am an expert XD
Cheers!!!! *wink

小太陽 (little sun)

"看著你的眼眶 忍著淚 閃著光
我會很快回來 繼續我們 未完的天堂
看著你的臉龐 微笑著 要我去闖
你的盼望 是我握在手中 小小的太陽"
“Looking at your eyes, you are not shading a tear;
I’ll be back soon to continue building on our paradise;
Looking at your face, you are smiling and asking me to move forward,
Your hopes are just like a little sun in my palm.”
-ashin-

I've been listening to 小太陽 (little sun) again and again...
and i can feel the emotion within this song which goes:
“the urge of leaving your suburban hometown to find your dreams in an urbanized city...
and yet...missing your dearest home and family while finding your dreams alone in a foreign land.”

This song can really make me visualize the beautiful scenic view of Li Jiang again as it is composed to promote a tea or something by Mayday.
